Who We are

Citizen Corps is FEMA's grassroots strategy to bring together government and community leaders to involve citizens in all-hazards emergency preparedness and resilience.

Currently there are approximately 30 Citizen Corps Councils in Louisiana. Nationwide there are 1,212 Councils which serve 184,303,827 people or 65% of the total U.S. population.

Citizen Corps encourages citizens to engage in personal preparedness, training and volunteer service to help prepare themselves and their communities through five (5) core programs:

What We do

The approximately 30 councils in Louisiana promote and strengthen the five (5) core Citizen Corps programs. Local Citizen Corps councils:

  • Provide opportunities for training in first aid and emergency preparedness.
  • Develop targeted education and training outreach for the community.
  • Organize special projects and community events
  • Encourage cooperation among community leaders.
  • Create opportunities for all residents to participate in preparedness and support first responders in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Citizen Corps encourages you to embrace personal responsibility to be prepared; to get training in first aid and emergency skills; and to volunteer to support local emergency responders, disaster relief and community safety.

Personal responsibility:
Developing a household preparedness plan and disaster supplies kits, observing home health and safety practices, implementing disaster mitigation measures, and participating in crime prevention and reporting.

Training: Taking classes in emergency preparedness, response capabilities, first aid, CPR, fire suppression and search and rescue procedures.

Volunteer service: Engaging individuals in volunteer activities that support first responders, disaster relief groups and community safety organizations. Everyone can do something to support local law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, community public health efforts and the five (5) stages of emergency management: prepare, prevent, respond, recover and mitigate.
