The Louisiana Office of Emergency Preparedness (LOEP) was initially created by the Civil Act of 1950.
In 1976, the agency, via the Louisiana government reorganization, was placed under the Department of Public Safety Services (DPS).
In 1990, the Agency was transferred to the Louisiana Military Department, and the Louisiana National Guard Adjutant General became the Agency Director.
In the spring of 2002, the agency moved into our current Independence Boulevard location from the previous downtown location on North Street.
In 2003, the Agency name was changed to the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (LOHSEP), reflecting the additional Homeland Security responsibilities.
In March of 2006, the Agency was moved under the Louisiana Governor's Office as an additional cabinet position and the name was changed to the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) to give the Governor direct oversight of homeland security and emergency management matters.
Over the years, the mission has evolved to include a wide spectrum of natural and man-made disasters, and as of 2003, the duties and responsibilities of supporting Louisiana's Homeland Security-related needs.
